Friendship Essay by Kerry

Something that is easily classified as invaluable is friendship. Friendship is often seen in literature. In Princess Academy, Things Not Seen and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, there are many instances where characters show the traits of being a friend.

In the book Princess Academy, Miri is a good friend to many people. First of all, she offers to be someone’s friend, even though they are almost a stranger. Miri walked right up to Britta and asked her if she would like to join her on a walk. Britta had been standing alone and seemed startled to be addressed, but went with Miri anyway. Miri had seen her lonely expression and was friendly when she went to greet her. Next, Miri never leaves anyone behind, friend or foe. When Miri was leading all the girls in an escape, she made sure that all of the girls were safely out of the academy before climbing out the window after them. She made sure that she was only putting herself in danger. Finally, Miri is never judgmental. She said, “The lowlanders are not so much different from us mountain folk.” Miri realized that Britta was a lowlander, but her attitude towards Britta did not change.  In conclusion, Miri showed kindness and loyalty to many people.

In the book Things Not Seen, Bobby and Alicia share a great friendship. First of all, even though Alicia is blind, Bobby looks past that. Alicia said “No one really talks to me now that I’m blind. They mostly just avoid me.” In Contrast, Bobby is willing to talk to Alicia, even though not many other people do. Also, Bobby understands Alicia’s disability more than anyone else because his invisibility is a bit like blindness,   except opposite; people can’t see you but you can see them. With Bobby there with her, Alicia can go past some limits of being blind and by her self. Bobby is smart because he handles being invisible while being in public with Alicia. First of all, he was right to ease her into the fact that he was invisible. If he had shouted it out as soon as he met her, who either have frightened her, scared her confused her or all three, there would not be a good friendship in the future. Also, he never put her in danger when they were around other people that did not know he was there. In conclusion, Bobby and Alicia have a very strong friendship.

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry, Ron and Hermione are friends in many ways. First, when Ron came looking for an apartment to ride in on the train, Harry didn’t falter to welcome him. “‘Anyone sitting here?’ asked Ron, pointing to the seat opposite Harry. ‘Everywhere else is full’ Harry shook his head and gave Ron a welcoming smile.” Just a single act of kindness to a stranger can result in a great friendship. Also, even though Harry and Ron did not like Hermione at first they still saved her from a terrible fate. As it says at the end of the exiting chapter in which Harry and Ron performed their heroic task,  “But from that moment on, Hermione Granger was their friend. There are some things in life you can’t go through without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.” There act of bravery saved a life and earned them a new friend. Finally, when Harry was in trouble, Ron and Hermione had to take a stand against who they thought was behind it, Professor Snape. “Reaching Snape, Hermione pulled out her wand, whispered a few, well chosen words and fled from the scene. But the job had been done for bright blue flames had appeared on the hem of Snape’s cloak. Meanwhile, Harry’s broom had stopped jerking around in the air.” Hermione could have gotten in deep trouble for using magic on a teacher, but that’s the kind of thing one would do for a friend. In conclusion, there is a very strong bond in that trio.

Friendship is the most precious thing two people can have. Princess Academy, Things Not Seen and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone all contain powerful examples of friendship. In Princess Academy, Miri is loyal, kind and never judgmental. In Things Not Seen, Bobby and Alicia are smart, understanding and caring. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry, Ron and Hermione are brave, loyal and open minded.  A true friendship can not be ended, but this essay would have had to come to a close sooner or later.

Friendship is all around us all the time. Not only is friendship in the real world, it is also in a lot of literature. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Devil’s Arithmetic, and “Chura and Marwe,” there are many examples of friendship.

In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Bruno and Shmuel are friends in several ways. First, Bruno is kind. Bruno was kind because he brought food to Shmuel at the dreadful camps. Without Bruno, Shmuel might have died very quickly because of the scarce food that is served. This shows that Bruno always came back for Shmuel and never left him alone. Also, Bruno and Shmuel were inseparable. A piece of evidence that supports this is while Bruno and Shmuel were in the gas chamber it said, “Bruno found that he was still holding Shmuel’s hand in his own and nothing in the world would have persuaded him to let go.” This shows that nothing could ever stop them from being great friends. Finally, both boys were very caring towards one another. Every day Bruno was delighted to see his friend waiting for him, sitting cross-legged on the other side of the huge wired fence. Shmuel and Bruno were always there for each other. Even though Bruno and Shmuel were very different, they still found a way to be great friends.

Hannah was a friend in The Devil’s Arithmetic in several ways. First, she was brave at the concentration camp. She took Rivka’s place to get killed for not doing their work at the camp. Hannah said, “Run for your life, Rivka. Run for your future. Run, Run, Run.” She was afraid of what might happen to her, but because it was for a friend she stepped in. She was also helpful with her knowledge from the future. Hannah warned them by saying that six million Jews would die at the camps and to be careful. This made sure that everyone stayed on task because something could have happened at any time. Hannah was also kind throughout the book. She helped the little kids on the tough ride to the camps. She also offered her share of bread. She made sure everybody was doing well. Hannah was a friend to everybody in the book.

Chura and Marwe are friends in the story “Chura and Marwe.” Chura shows caring towards Marwe. When Marwe ran to try and jump in to the pool; Chura was calling after her trying to stop her. This shows that he cared for her and was loyal not to let her go. Also, Marwe was loyal. Marwe went to the Underworld because she drowned herself. Marwe missed Chura so she tried to get back from the Underworld. Marwe was loyal to get back and save the friendship. Chura was thoughtful towards Marwe. When he heard she was back he went to find her. On page 125 Chura said, “Marwe is back from the Underworld and I’ll see her.” He was always thinking of her when she was gone. Chura and Marwe are friends in the book.

Friendship is shown everywhere you go! The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Devil’s Arithmetic, and “Chura and Marwe” all contain powerful examples of friendship. Bruno and Shmuel are kind and caring. They also show that they are inseparable in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. In The Devil’s Arithmetic, Hannah shows that she is brave and helpful with her knowledge from the future. Friendship is a wonderful thing that no one should have to live without. Even in books everyone finds a friend even if they walk up out of nowhere or suddenly send you a letter by pigeon. In Princess Academy, Once Upon a Marigold, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, there are many examples of friendship.

In Princess Academy, Miri is a wonderful friend in many ways. First, she is brave when she needs to help her friends. On pages 262-265, Miri tries to rescue the girls from the bandits even though she is putting herself in danger. On top of that, she is kind. In the book, Miri gives test answers to her friends through quarry speech. This is kind because, she is helping all the academy girls get what they have worked for, a chance to meet the prince at a ball, all year. Finally, she is a good listener. For example, on pages 293-295, Miri listens to Britta’s whole story, and she consoles Britta when she is finished. In summary, Miri would make a great friend if she were not a fictional character.

In Once Upon a Marigold, Chris and Marigold are friends in many ways. First, they are both caring. Marigold is caring when she won’t leave Chris in the dungeon when he hasn’t done anything wrong. Chris is caring on pages 149 and 150 when he warns Marigold of her mother’s evil plans. He is showing care because Marigold would have died if he had not warned her. Chris is also brave on pages 223-225 when he tries to rescue Marigold even though the guards might kill him. Marigold is a concerned friend. Throughout the book she is always thinking about him. In conclusion, Chris and Marigold make great friends.

Bruno and Shmuel are great friends to each other in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. First, Bruno is kind to Shmuel. On page 161, Bruno brings Shmuel bread and cheese which is kind because Shmuel is not fed well in the camp so, he is always hungry. Shmuel is caring towards Bruno because he will not let him into the camp. This shows Shmuel is being caring because he knows that bad things are happening in the camp, and does not want Bruno to experience the same things he is experiencing. Finally, they are loyal to each other. Page 150 says “everyday Bruno goes to spot on the fence, and Shmuel is always there waiting for him.” This shows loyalty because they could not show up, but they both do. In conclusion, Bruno and Shmuel are loyal, caring, and kind.

Friendship is something that you will not want to give up once you have it. Princess Academy, Once Upon a Marigold, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas all contain powerful examples of friendship. In Princess Academy, Miri is a good friend to have because she is brave, kind, and a good listener. In Once Upon a Marigold, Chris and Marigold have a strong friendship because they are caring. In addition to that, Chris is brave and Marigold is concerned. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Shmuel and Bruno fit together wonderfully. This is because they are both loyal. Shmuel is also caring and Bruno is kind. In summary, friends win together and lose together and that’s what makes them friends.
